1 The Seedling – At SUMA
Caste in bronze , this work by Marvin Nelson, depicts the wonder inspired by new growth. “The Seedling” was first installed on the SUU campus next to Old Main and was moved to the Stillman Sculpture Court when the landscaping was completed in the summer of 2016. In addition to the Sculpture Court, the Southern Utah Museum of Art, curates several additional indoor spaces that we invite you to visit. The main building immediately to the west features several galleries, a viewable conservation space and the Beverly Sorenson suite hosting classrooms for K-12 hands-on art experiences and workspaces for university students that help to operate the museum. We invite you to drop by and enjoy the current exhibits.
2 The Seedling – The Power of Creativity
This work attempts to capture that “inquisitive spark in all children, young and old, that ignites their creativity.” Standing in the midst of the Beverley Center For The Arts the statue’s themes of learning, growth and creativity are a reflection of the buildings that surround it: three theatres, an art museum and the home of the university president. A former chairwoman of the The Friends of the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, saw the potential [for] growth embodied in this work as “a perfect metaphor for the power of the arts in our lives.”
3 The Seedling – Artist: Marvin Nelson
Artist Marvin Nelson had his first museum showing when his piece featuring a crayon drawing of a monster surrounded by yarn was accepted for display at the Springville Art Museum in Springville, Utah. He was in 1rst grade. Since then Nelson’s work has been included in numerous museum and gallery shows, including a few more appearances of his later professional work at the Springville Museum. Nelson fine-tuned his craft working in the gallery and foundry of artist Gary Price.
