December 1850 I was called on a mission to Little Salt Lake, Iron County, in company with George A. Smith, arrived at the place later called Paromwan on the 13th of January 1851, built me a adobe house and made a farm. In the fall of 1861, was called by George A. Smith to settle on Coal Creek, later called Cedar City… In the spring of 1852 President Brigham Young came to Cedar and organized a company to make iron and appointed me to preside over same.”

2 Richard Harrison – Jack of All Trades
Though initially serving as the Superintendent of the Cedar City Iron Works, Harrison remained with the project in various capacities as the mining and manufacturing operations were taken on by different men and a variety of companies. Work records indicate that in 1857 alone, he shingled the blacksmith shop, cleared the casting house and the trial furnace, and molded the small furnace. He subsequently “fitted up” the cylinders of the steam engine, worked as a carpenter, helped build a wagon box for the coal mine and joined a large crew of more than 40 men in building a reservoir to create a reliable water supply for the steam engine.

3 Richard Harrison – Artist: Kreg Harrison
Unveiled in 2009, this statue of Cedar City Iron Works founder Richard Hararison, was created by Utah sculpture, Kreg Harraison, a 5th generation grandson of his subject. Kreg has described his sculptural work as “breathing life into bronze.”
Though he has fashioned several captivating human figures like this one, Harrison is best known around the world for his life-like bronze sculptures of dogs and horses, first sketching and sculpting them in clay while he studies them in person, “shaping still life, from real life.” This artistic enterprise has been so successful that he was once featured on the cover of the Wall Street Journal.

In an interview with Salt Lake City’s Deseret News, he noted,
“I haven’t asked for this.
