1 The Zone – Mind, Body, Spirit
This work seeks to express the artists’ feelings that the key to physical success is the coming together of three key athletic components, body, mind and spirit, and that this union is built upon focus. Effective focus is what brings about that human physical experience of being in that elusive euphoric zone of physical peak performance. This sculpture celebrates this focus, as well as presenting a physical metaphor reflecting the strength and power of the geological formations surrounding the campus.

Howard Meehan’s Firefly Public Art Studio has successfully installed more than 35 large scale public art projects in cities and at universities across the U.S. His deep understanding of the public space allows him to create powerful visual statements that capture the imagination of a broad audience, while visionary concepts tackle broad themes that demand thought and invite conversation.

Beginning with a strong visual concept, the artist’s iconic images communicate the spirit of a place. They engage, allowing the community to embrace each project. As here at the Sorensen Building, their work is often found at the entrance to a public space, serving as a beacon, a gateway, or a welcome.
