Call for papers 2026
Posted on 2025-02-27 17:14:26The Journal of the Wooden O (JWO) is a peer-reviewed academic publication focusing on Shakespeare studies. The editors invite papers on topics related to Shakespeare, including Shakespearean texts, Shakespeare in performance, the adaptation of Shakespeare works (film, fiction, and visual and performing arts), Elizabethan and Jacobean culture and history, and Shakespeare’s contemporaries.
The JWO is published annually by Southern Utah University Press in connection with the Gerald R. Sherratt Library and the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Articles published in the JWO are indexed in the MLA International Bibliography, World Shakespeare Bibliography and appear full-text in EBSCO Academic Search Premiere.
Selected papers from the annual Wooden O Symposium are also considered for publication.
SUBMISSIONS: Manuscripts should follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. Manuscript submissions should generally be between 4000-8000 words in length. Please review the JWO Style Sheet, which may be found at https://www.suu.edu/library/wooden-o.html. The deadline for submission is October 16, 2026. Authors should include all of the following information on a separate page with their submission:

AI POLICY: The Journal of the Wooden O is committed to maintaining integrity in the publishing of researched, original scholarly articles about Shakespeare and his world. As such, the journal will neither accept for consideration nor publication any manuscripts created in large or in part using Generative AI tools. These tools are understood to be systems such as, but not limited to, ChatGPT and LLMs that generate text, including that of the textual body, notes, and bibliography. Because such text is not in the author’s voice, it requires citation. Because AI lacks legal and ethical authority in its use of language, it cannot be cited as an author. Authors submitting manuscripts for publication in the Journal of the Wooden O remain fully responsible for the originality and integrity of their work.
Any use of AI in the preparation of the manuscript must be fully disclosed in a separate letter attached to the submission, with the exception of grammar check and spell check, which need not be disclosed.
