Often painted as a cruel and miserable man, some view Shylock a by-product of his culture. Having endured persecution because of his faith he turns bitter towards his persecutors, becoming the pivotal character with his quest for a “pound of flesh”.

Shylock’s daughter, Jessica, a Jewess, and Lorezno, a Christian, flee and elope. This fateful decision leaves Shylock broken and set on revenge.

The Pound of Flesh
After misfortune strikes and Antonio is unable to repay his debt to Shylock. Shylock insists on exacting Antonio’s payment of a “pound of flesh”.
Portia in Court
Portia and Nerissa disguise themselves as a lawyer and clerk to follow Bassanio and Gratiano to Venice. Portia is then charged with judging Shylock against Antonio. Using Shylock’s own logic against him, Portia saves Antonio and Shylock’s desire for revenge is thwarted.
